From The Campaign Trail

FRED SMITH GOVERNOR 2008 - "A Little Extra Effort" Statewide BBQ Tour
Look on as D.J., a Fred Smith campaign team-member, keeps the folks back home informed about Fred's activities while he's on the road meeting the people of our great state...

Friday, February 15, 2008...Alleghany County...Not your ordinary day. Ira and Fred were the lone travelers as Dwayne Durham from Henderson offered to meet them and set up so I could keep rolling on this new project. I'd just gotten settled at my computer and Jonathan called down the hall, "the RV's got a flat tire." You would have though we'd practiced this fire drill before. Bill grabbed his keys; I gathered mine and we were off to 540 and Six Forks Road to meet them and trade cars. Bill drives a Triumph convertible and we knew Fred would be more comfortable in my Mercury. I also wanted to stay with the driver until he was off the road and settled with a truck tire company. Fred and Bill left with all campaign accoutrements in the trunk; Ira hobbled along the soft shoulder to the exit. At the BP station we parked next to a Wilson Homebuilding truck. He came out of store and Ira asked him if he knew a truck tire company. "I don't but my mechanic does - sad that I know his number by heart," said Bill Wilson whose mechanic referred us to Piedmont Tires. As Bill got into his truck he called back, "Oh, tell Fred when he gets elected Governor, I want to see a liberal (cooked) in every pot!" (If your history is rusty, Herbert Hoover promised prosperity when he ran to be president by offering "a chicken in every pot.") Piedmont was on their way; I headed back to office. We're at BBQ number 90 with few problems; if this is the worst of it that's okay. Fred and Bill arrived at 12:05 to a full room at the Wellness Center. Our county folks called afterwards all excited about the 60 plus folks that came, most of whom they'd never seen at a GOP event before. That attraction to Fred continues as people read his book and get to know his capabilities, determination and ability to persevere. So as they say, "all's well that ends well." Thanks to all the good folks of Alleghany for your flexibility and support. We look forward to a great turn out for Fred on primary day!
